We don’t know what would prompt someone to make such a modification to a classic 8 Series
December 22, 2024 19:12
- This heavily modified 1990 BMW 850i is listed at a British dealer for nearly $20,000.
- The E31’s body kit, black and yellow interior, and oversized wings clash with the classic design.
- Its 296-horsepower 5.0-liter V12 engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission.
The first-generation 8 Series is one of BMW’s most timeless designs, a quintessential example of 1990s elegance, and despite being 34 years old, its styling still looks brilliant today. But what about this? This manual 1990 BMW 850i Coupe was taken apart and reassembled into what can only be described as a tuning experiment inspired by a misguided era. 2 Fast and Furious 2 Something went terribly wrong.

The German coupe with a 5.0-liter V12 engine is on sale through UK-based Signature Motor Company with an asking price of £14,995 (approximately $18,900), which is probably £14,994 too expensive if you ask us. No details were provided about the ownership history of this crime against Bavarian engineering, or how or why it ended up in this condition, but we suspect it will only appeal to a small group of buyers.
When a good car encounters bad modifications
Let’s start at the back because… wow. From this angle, the car is almost unrecognizable as a BMW. The massive wings have been bolted on, and the 8 Series’ taillights have been replaced with six dollar-store-style round lights. To make matters worse, the rear bumper sticks out awkwardly a few inches, as if it’s trying to escape, and houses quad exhaust pipes that look more like a last-minute afterthought than a design choice.
The nightmare continues with the wheel. The previous owner fitted the E31 with a strange set of chrome wheels that didn’t match the 8 Series’ design at all. The front of the car is slightly less exaggerated than the rear, but does include a new hood and a crazy bumper. Tacky yellow paint and childish graphic embellishments sealed the deal. Thankfully, the pop-up headlights managed to survive this questionable makeover.

Unfortunately, the interior of the Classic 8 Series is just as weird as the exterior. Most cabin surfaces have been reupholstered in black and yellow leather, again lowering the car’s price and certainly limiting its appeal. There are also aftermarket steering wheels and shift knobs. Hopefully anyone buying this 850i will drop all the weird add-ons and try to return it to stock.
