While it doesn’t look drastically different on the outside, the updated Thai-market Nissan Navara features a new dashboard with soft-touch inserts (depending on the model), and a new 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system similar to the systems found in other models like the Qashqai, X-Trail and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Besides the design changes and the new, larger display, highlights include the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, and a revised climate control panel that combines physical switchgear with a digital panel to display temperature and fan speed.

A Nissan Australia spokesman said that while the local Navara model comes from Thailand Automotive Expert: “This update is specifically for the Thai market. There are no plans for this car in Australia at this time.”

The changes reportedly appear to be aimed at bringing the Navara pickup into line with the related Nissan Terra 4WD, which is to the Navara what the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X are to the Ranger and D-Max.

The Terra is almost a spiritual successor to the first-generation Pathfinder, but it was never sold in Australia.

Other changes for the Thai market include the fitting of a Euro 5 emissions system to the 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel engine – it seems Thailand is further behind than Australia.

This primarily involves the addition of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which helps reduce harmful particles and pollutants emitted by diesel engines.

Lower-grade Navaras in the Thai market are powered by a 2.3-litre diesel single-turbo version, similar to the Australian range.

While dual-cab pick-up sales continue to boom in Australia, the Nissan Navara is much smaller than rivals such as the Ranger, HiLux and D-Max, despite having enjoyed decent growth in recent months.

As of July 31, 2024, there were 665 new 4×2 vehicles and 5714 4×4 Navara vehicles registered in Australia, an increase of 118.0% and 48.5% respectively compared to January to July 2023.

However, the Navara is a bit player compared to the Ford Ranger, which registered 3216 4×2 and 35,230 4×4 vehicles respectively in the same period – essentially more than six times the sales of the Navara.

However, Nissan hasn’t given up on the old Navara, recently launching a limited-edition Black Edition in Australia, and is expected to release several new models in the coming months.

Despite being a decade old, it’s unclear when the next-generation Navara will debut, let alone arrive in Australia.

Nissan representatives were tight-lipped about the next generation of the popular pickup, and the brand is apparently not on the same product timeline as alliance partner Mitsubishi, which recently unveiled the latest version of its Triton pickup.

Three years ago, then-new Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said that while the two brands would collaborate and share some parts, there would be clear differences between the two models.

“The brand, the ‘Nissan identity’, will be decided from the top. But if you look back, in the relationship with Renault, because we had a challenging volume mandate, each partner tried to cannibalize as little as possible,” he said.

“So we sought a significant difference between the two and the result was a less efficient investment. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to take the same upper body1724625479… That’s not our intention.

“… we will be differentiated (but) we can use existing assets, for example, we seek to take a universal door. There are other successful models that take a universal door but look different.”
