Top 10 SUV sales in the first half of 2024 – Punch, Creta, Brezza, Scorpio,

In the first half of 2024, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) continued to dominate car sales, with demand growing by 27.90%

Following our earlier report on the top 30 best-selling cars in the first half of 2024, we now assess the best-selling SUVs during the same period. During January-June 2024, SUV sales grew to 9,85,801 units, an increase of 2,15,062 units from 7,70,739 units in the same period of 2023.

Top 10 SUV sales in the first half of 2024 – Tata Punch leads the way

Tata Punch/EV dominated the SUV segment with 1,10,308 units sold during January-June 2024. This is a growth of 64.35% with sales of 43,191 units and a share of 11.19% compared to 67,117 units sold during the same period of 2023. Punch is not only the best-selling SUV in India but also the only SUV to have sold more than 1 lakh units. A host of features, advanced technology, high safety ratings and competitive pricing have contributed to its increased demand.

The second spot went to the Hyundai Creta compact SUV with sales of 91,348 units in the first six months of the year. This is a growth of 10.64 per cent with 8,782 more units sold and a share of 9.27 per cent compared to 82,566 units sold in the same period of 2023. The Maruti Brezza, which offers both petrol and diesel engine options in the sub-4 metre SUV segment, saw its sales rise by 9.68 per cent to 90,135 units in the first half of 2024. The Brezza currently holds a 9.14 per cent share on the list.

It is followed by the Mahindra Scorpio/N, which sold 85,326 units in the first half of 2024, up 63.97% from 52,036 units in the same period of 2023. Marketed with the slogan of “King of SUVs”, the Scorpio/N has also topped the company’s sales charts every month, and recently the company has added some extra features to enhance its appeal.

Tata Nexon/EV sales slipped 8.20% to 80,326 units in H1 2024 from 87,501 units in H1 2023. The sales declined by 7,175 units. Maruti Fronx reportedly saw brisk demand with its sales rising 189.05% to 76,997 units in H1 2024, up 50,359 units from 26,638 units in H1 2023. With the new crossover SUV being actively tested, the Fronx is likely to face some competition in the sub-4 meter segment. Also from Maruti Suzuki is the Grand Vitara, whose sales rose 14.08% to 62,738 units in H1 2024.

However, the Hyundai Venue suffered a setback, with sales falling 6.68% to 58,715 units in the first half of 2024. It was followed by the Mahindra Bolero, which saw sales rise 2.86% to 55,352 units, up from 53,812 units in the first half of 2023. The Kia Sonet also surpassed the 50,000 mark in sales. In the first half of 2024, Sonet sales rose only slightly by 0.35% to 54,322 units, just 188 more than the 54,134 units sold in the first half of 2023.

Top 10 SUV sales in the first half of 2024 (January to June) – less than 50,000 units

Despite failing to break the 50,000 unit mark, these SUVs all sold more units in the first half of 2024 than they did in the same period of 2023. The Hyundai Exter sold 46,647 units, accounting for 4.73% of the list. It was followed by the Kia Seltos, which saw sales increase by 1.13% to 40,344 units.

In the Mahindra range, it was followed by the XUV700, Thar and XUV3XO, with each model seeing an increase in demand. Mahindra XUV700 sales grew 21.57% to 37,433 units in H1 2024, compared to 30,792 units sold in the same period last year. Thar sales grew 28.78% to 35,026 units in H1 2024, while XUV3XO sales grew 9.47% to 32,242 units. It was followed by the Toyota Hyryder, which grew 46.35% to 28,542 units, an increase of 9,040 units from the 19,502 units sold in H1 2023.
