In August 2024, Maruti Suzuki WagonR became the best-selling hatchback, surpassing the Swift which had grabbed the top spot in July. It sold 16,450 units, up 5.60% from 15,578 units sold last year. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The WagonR moved up to the top spot last month from the second position in sales in July 2024. The hatchback is available in four core variants (LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+) and two engine options (1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol and 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol). The 1.0-litre petrol engine produces 67 hp and 90 Nm of torque, while the 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 82 hp and 113 Nm of torque. The car is based on Maruti Suzuki’s Heartect platform and is priced between Rs 5.55 lakh and Rs 7.33 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Swift sold 12,844 units last month, down 31.14% year-on-year from the 18,653 units delivered in August last year. For the uninitiated, 16,854 units were sold in July 2024, making the Swift the best-selling model. The car is available in five variants (LXi, VXi, VXi (O) ZXi and ZXi+) and is priced between Rs 6.49 lakh and Rs 9.6 lakh (all ex-showroom). It is equipped with the Z-series 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 80bhp of power at 5,700rpm and 112Nm of torque at 4,300rpm.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
Last month, Baleno maintained the third position it had held since July. In August 2024, the hatchback sold 12,485 units, down 32.57% from the same period last year. Mechanically, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno comes with a 1.2-litre twin-injection petrol engine (89bhp/113Nm) that can be paired with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic gearbox. It also comes with a CNG powertrain. Baleno is available in four main variants: Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. It is priced between Rs 6.66 lakh and Rs 9.83 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Maruti Suzuki Alto
Despite a year-on-year decline of 11.01%, the Alto still holds the fourth spot among the best-selling hatchbacks in August. Its sales stood at 8,546 units as against 9,603 units sold in August last year. The hatchback is available in four main variants: Std, LXi, VXi and VXi Plus. It is powered by a 1-litre Dualjet petrol engine that produces 66bhp and 89Nm of torque and is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The hatchback is also available with a CNG drivetrain. Price-wise, the Alto retails between Rs 3.99 lakh and Rs 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios ranked fifth in sales last month despite a year-on-year decline of 26.57%. The hatchback sold 5,365 units last month compared to 7,306 units sold in August 2023. Mechanically, the hatchback uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 82 PS and 114 Nm of power, paired with a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox. However, the same engine in CNG produces 68 PS and 95 Nm of power, paired with a single 5-speed manual gearbox. The Hyundai hatchback is available in five main variants (Era, Magna, Corporate, Sportz and Asta) and is priced between Rs 5.92 lakh and Rs 8.56 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
