Top 5 best-selling sedans in July 2024: Maruti Suzuki Dzire,

The Indian sedan market suffered a sharp decline in July 2024, with overall sales falling 22.12% year-on-year. The overall sales of sedans in the month were 25,891 units, compared to 33,244 units in July 2023, a decline of 7,353 units. Despite the decline in sales, some models in the market continued to dominate, while sales of other models fell sharply.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

In July 2024, Maruti Suzuki Dzire topped the sedan sales charts with 11,647 units sold in the domestic market. However, this was a 13% decline from the 13,395 units sold in the same period last year. It is available in four variants: ZXi, ZXi+, VXi and LXi, with ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs 6.57 lakh to Rs 9.39 lakh. The car is powered by a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine that produces 89 hp and 113 Nm of torque, mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT gearbox. When powered by CNG, the same engine produces a maximum power of 76 hp and a peak torque of 98.5 Nm using only a five-speed MT gearbox. Although the manufacturer is yet to announce the launch details, we expect the Dzire facelift to be launched in India this year.

Hyundai Aura

The Hyundai Aura continues to maintain its position as the second best-selling sedan in India, following closely behind its main rival, the Dzire. In July 2024, Hyundai Aura sales reached 4,757 units, up 5% from 4,514 units in the same period last year. Compared to the previous year, Hyundai sold 243 more units of the model, capturing 18.37% of the market share. The subcompact sedan is priced starting at Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom) in India and is available in six single-color exterior paint jobs. Mechanically, the Aura’s 1.2-litre engine produces 82 hp of maximum power and 114 Nm of peak torque when mated to an AMT or a five-speed manual gearbox. However, when running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), the vehicle produces only 68 hp and 95 Nm of torque and comes with a five-speed manual gearbox.

On the other hand, Honda Amaze ranked third with 2,327 units sold last month. This is a year-on-year decline of 31% compared to 3,386 units in July 2023. The market share of Amaze is 8.99%. This sub-Rs 40 lakh sedan is priced between Rs 7.16 lakh and Rs 9.92 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and has a trunk capacity of 420 litres. It is equipped with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with peak power of 88 horsepower and maximum torque of 110 Nm, and is available with a CVT or a five-speed manual transmission. According to several industry reports, the next-generation Honda Amaze is currently under development and may be scheduled to be launched during the festive season this year.

The Volkswagen Virtus ranked fourth with sales of 1,766 units last month, up 2% from 1,737 units sold in the same period last year. Due to the impressive sales, it became the most popular model in the mid-size sedan segment last month. Meanwhile, its sibling, the Skoda Slavia, ranked eighth in overall sedan sales. Talking about the mechanicals, the Virtus in our market is available with two petrol engines: a 1.5-litre engine with 148 hp and a 1.0-litre engine with 113.4 hp. In India, the Volkswagen sedan is priced at Rs 11.48 lakh ex-showroom.

Tata Tigor

Tata’s Tigor (including the EV version) has experienced one of the worst sales declines in the market. In July 2024, a total of 1,495 units of the model were sold, a year-on-year decline of 44.30% from 2,684 units in July 2023. Despite the decline in sales, the Tigor still holds a 5.77% market share. Under the hood, the Tata Tigor is equipped with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 85bhp and 113Nm of torque. In CNG mode, the engine can produce 72bhp and 95Nm of torque. Moreover, the transmission options for the CNG-powered Tigor include a five-speed manual and a five-speed automatic gearbox.
