Japanese buyers now have a shiny new option in the Toyota Crown range, but that’s all no shining. It’s called the Crown Sport Limited Matte Metal, and it’s an 8.2 million yen (about $55,000 at current prices) crossover that tries really hard to convince you that stealth is the new glam.

Finished in a special matte paint job that screams “I’m too cool for gloss,” this model is aimed at those who want to blend in – at least into a bulky, high-end Toyota .

So, tongue twisters aside, what’s so special about Limited Matte Metal? Well, it’s basically a long-top version of the Crown Crossover that launched in late 2023, now dipped from head to toe in a stealthy matte gray shade. All examples coming to the production line will have the same finish, and while matte paint traditionally requires a lot of maintenance, this one is a little different.

After applying the matte topcoat, Toyota applies a special coating called “TM Coat” over the paint. This extra layer doesn’t ruin the matte’s pristine vibe, but it does make it scratch-resistant and better protected against road grime.

Contrasting with the matte finish are some gloss black accents, including the window frames, rocker panels and lower front lip. Bright gray wheels and red accents on the brake calipers complete the look.

The cabin also received some custom design. While most surfaces are covered in black leather, Limited Matt Metallic adds metallic accents, and a light gold finish extends to the dashboard, around the air vents, and on part of the steering wheel.

It also includes special logos and text on the dashboard limited matte metaljust in case you forgot which special edition you were riding. Buyers will also be happy to know that it comes standard with a digital key, allowing you to unlock the car via a smartphone app.

Since the model is based on the PHEV version of the Crown Sport, it uses a 2.5-liter petrol engine working together with an electric motor to deliver a combined 302 horsepower, delivered through all four wheels. Using electricity alone, you can glide silently for up to 56 miles (90 kilometers). Or, if you’re looking for a longer trip, switch to hybrid mode and extend the range between stops to 746 miles (1,200 kilometers).
