Under the hood, the Toyota Hilux Rangga SUV is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine with MT and AT gearbox options

In the Indian market, Toyota is not known for its affordability or value for money. The Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux based on the IMV platform are clear examples of this conundrum. However, in Indonesia, Toyota will soon launch an affordable SUV version of the Hilux Rangga pickup truck.

Indonesian aftermarket bus manufacturer New Armada built the body of the Toyota Rangga SUV concept shown a few months ago. The production version of the car will be produced by Toyota Astra Motors exclusively for the Indonesian market (as of this writing). Now that official images have been revealed, we can take a closer look at what’s in store.

The Indonesian Hilux Rangga is also known as Hilux Champ in a few markets. The company confirmed that the SUV version of the car is expected to be launched in early 2025. The overall design and appeal have been greatly improved compared to the commercial pickup version, making it look more premium.

However, the way the Rangga SUV is built still looks rather crude. However, these design elements also give it a rugged and muscular appeal. Up front, we can see the same fascia as the Rangga, with the addition of LED daytime running lights, projector headlights, and what looks like a metal bumper with exposed bolts.

There are many unpainted elements on the dashboard. The bonnet sits high and has interesting details, while the front side panels and upright windshield also add to the muscular look. The alloy wheels are black. The overall design of this SUV looks very similar to the pickup version, right down to the B-pillar.

Starting from the B-pillar, the Rangga SUV is all-new with an interestingly shaped rear door. The metal panels on all four doors have interesting details. The door handles on all four doors are vertical pull-type. The white roof shown in the image has a floating roof effect. Roof rails add to an already tall vehicle.

Practical interior design

The interior will also be basic but will strive to provide a satisfying experience with dual airbags, touchscreen infotainment system, power windows, rear AC vents, third row and more seating for up to 7 passengers Flexible seating options. Other basic amenities are expected to be available on this economical SUV based on the IMV platform.

Talking about the platform, the Toyota Hilux Rangga SUV will share its underpinnings with the Hilux pickup, Innova Crysta MPV and Fortuner SUV. It may be powered by a 2.0L petrol engine or a 2.4L diesel engine, paired with manual or automatic transmission options. An India launch is unlikely, but Indonesia will launch it in 2025.
