Toyota’s first electric car for India to be produced in Gujarat

Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat will start producing Toyota’s first all-electric vehicle for India in spring 2025

Suzuki and Toyota are strengthening their partnership with the launch of a new battery-electric SUV designed by Suzuki and supplied to Toyota. Production of the model is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025 at Suzuki’s plant in the Indian state of Gujarat. Since the partnership began in 2016, the two automakers have established a strong and broad alliance.

The partnership between Suzuki and Toyota spans multiple areas, including vehicle manufacturing, model sharing and driving the adoption of electric vehicles. The collaboration facilitates the launch of jointly developed vehicles in markets including Japan, India, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Designed specifically for pure electric vehicles and built on a dedicated skateboard platform, this SUV is preparing for global launch. Toyota emphasizes the agile handling and long range of pure electric vehicles. The model also promises a spacious and comfortable cabin as well as an optional four-wheel drive system for enhanced versatility and performance.

The upcoming all-electric vehicle is touted to offer superior driving performance even on challenging terrain. The car’s pure electric vehicle unit and platform were jointly developed by Suzuki, Toyota and Daihatsu Motor Corporation. Its design draws heavily on the Toyota Urban SUV concept launched last year. The five-seater will share some features with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and is set to hit the Indian market as part of its global rollout.

The eVX concept was first unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo and was later shown in more refined form at the Tokyo Motor Show of the same year. Its production version, the e Vitara, made its world premiere in Milan last month and is expected to be launched in early 2025 following its official debut at the 2025 Delhi Auto Expo.

Single and dual motors will be available and the starting price is likely to be a little under Rs. 20 Lakhs (ex-showroom). It is said that it can travel more than 500 kilometers on a single charge.
