For many people, a car is their second biggest investment after a home. While the idea of a “forever home” is common, few people buy a car thinking it’s their “forever car.” There’s no reason a car can’t last forever; it just takes the right car and a little love. If you’re willing, here are three simple steps to try. Step 1: Build a Relationship Before we get started, let’s just say that this isn’t that kind of blog, we’re strictly about how to build a rapport with your mechanic. It’s not as hard or scary as you might think, starting with going to one place to do everything. You might ask why? Does it help? The answer is simple, it’s so they get to know your car, inside and out. All the quirks and oddities give it charm and character. When a mechanic knows your car as well as you do, they can tell what’s truly best for it. Step 2: Why prevent problems today that can cost more to fix tomorrow? If you’re confused by this step, that’s okay, it wasn’t written for you, and it’s bad backwards advice anyway. The problem is, there are a lot of people who have this mindset. Maintenance isn’t important. The real title for this step should be “An ounce of prevention is worth a gallon of cure” because it is true. Regular oil changes, regular inspections, and regular maintenance all keep a car on the road longer. When you break down on the side of the road, it can snowball into a costly tow + repair. Be proactive, not reactive, there is no fun on the side of the road. Step 3: Rust is lighter than steel It’s a common saying from people who have “race cars” that have a resale value slightly less than the rims they are mounted on. While they are not technically wrong, it is not worth the few ounces they save. We want to let you in on a little secret, rust is completely preventable. Now, before you start to object, yes, we know we live in Chicago. We also know that during the winter months, our roads have more salt and potholes than pavement. None of this overturns our previous statement that rust is actually preventable. It’s also simple, the key to preventing salt buildup can be taken care of by any good car wash that offers undercarriage cleaning. Rust inhibitors and primers can help too. In the end, it really isn’t that hard to keep that forever car. Just like a house, it requires maintenance and upkeep, probably a lot less than a house, but more than a washing machine or a microwave. We hope these tips will help you.
