  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into engine failures in Acura and Honda vehicles.
  • Prior to this, the government received 173 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles with 3.5-liter V6 engines.
  • A previous recall addressed an engine manufacturing defect, so the investigation will examine whether some vehicles are affected by the defect.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the 3.5-liter V6 engine that powers various Acura and Honda vehicles. Prior to this, the government received 173 reports of connecting rod bearing failures.

The report covers the 2016-2020 Acura MDX and 2018-2020 TLX. At Honda, there are reports covering the 2016-2020 Pilot, 2017-2019 Ridgeline, and 2018-2019 Odyssey.

The incidents resulted in at least one crash or fire, and the government noted that recalls have been issued to “address such failures in certain production ranges of these vehicles.” In addition, all 173 reports “displaying fault characteristics consistent with those mentioned in the previous recall” were not included.

The vehicle involved in this recall is 23V-751, involving 248,999 vehicles, including 2015-2020 TLX, 2016-2020 MDX, 2016 Pilot, 2018-2019 Pilot, 2018-2019 Odyssey, 2017 Ridgeline and 2019 Ridgeline. It’s a hodgepodge, and they’re being recalled due to a manufacturing defect in the engine crankshaft, which can cause premature wear and seizure of the connecting rod bearings.

After digging deeper, the government said incorrect equipment setup during the manufacturing process resulted in improper grinding of the crank pins, resulting in a crowned or convex shape. The automaker became aware of the problem in 2020 and issued a recall three years later after receiving 1,450 warranty claims related to the issue.

As part of the remediation, dealers will inspect the engine and repair or replace it if necessary. The number of 23V-751 recalls was determined based on manufacturing records, and it appears that a small number of vehicles may have been missed.

In light of this, the investigation will examine the severity of the alleged defects in vehicles outside the scope of the previous recall, as well as review the scope of the recall. Depending on how things unfold, more vehicles may eventually be recalled.
