in short
The American Artificial Intelligence Security Institute (AISI), part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), announced the release of its first synthetic content guidance report, NIST AI 100 4, on November 20, 2024 to reduce the risks posed by synthetic content: Overview of Technical Approaches to Digital Content Transparency (“NIST AI 100 4“). President Biden’s Executive Order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence defines “synthetic content” (“Ethylene oxide 14110”) as “information, such as images, videos, audio clips, and text, that has been significantly altered or generated by algorithms, including artificial intelligence. “
NIST AI 100 4 examines existing standards, tools, methods, and practices, as well as the potential development of further scientifically supported standards and techniques, to help manage and reduce risks associated with synthetic content by: 1) Documenting and revealing the source of the content , including the origin and change history of the content; 2) provide tools to label and identify AI-generated content; 3) reduce the production and dissemination of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (“AT CSAM“) and non-consensual intimate images (“NCII“) real individuals. It reflects public feedback and consultations with various stakeholders who responded to NIST’s request for information on December 21, 2023. Although compliance is voluntary, NIST AI 100 4 is expected to inform industry best practices for managing the risk of synthetic content.
