The Buick Grand National has long held a special place among American performance cars. It was an intimidating machine even in its original 1987 guise, but nothing is crazier than this wildly reimagined version from Ringbrothers. Unveiled at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, this radical model may be the most astonishing Grand National the world has ever seen.
When the Grand National was introduced, the performance car turned heads with its turbocharged V6 engine. It might have been easy for Ringbrothers to forget about this car’s heritage and install a high-capacity V8, but it didn’t. Instead, they stayed true to the car’s spirit, albeit with a few sinister twists.
This restomod, named Invasionequipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 built by Duttweiler Performance that produces an incredible 1,246 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet (1,355 Nm) of torque, numbers that make the original model’s modest 240 horsepower seem almost ridiculous.

The engine’s powerhouse features two 62mm turbochargers, a billet steel crankshaft and a custom hand-ported aluminum cylinder. It’s mated to a Tremec T-56 Magnum six-speed transmission to drive the rear wheels.
Not only did Ringbrothers ditch the car’s original V6 engine, they also replaced the chassis with a new one from the Roadster Shop. Three-way adjustable Penske shocks were added and there’s even an air jack. All of the car’s wiring had to be redone, and it now has a new fuel cell and has the same Brembo front and rear brake calipers and carbon-ceramic discs as the C6-generation Corvette ZR1.
Visually, the shop didn’t change much from the Grand National’s classic look, although subtle upgrades hint at the car’s capabilities. New three-piece HRE wheels (19-inch front, 20-inch rear) wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires provide grip and style. A custom chin spoiler, slightly flared rear quarter panels and carbon fiber hood scoop add a modern, aggressive touch without taking away from the car’s original beauty.
One look inside the cabin tells you this is important. The interior is dominated by a roll cage, complemented by custom gauges, a new steering wheel and a Vintage Air climate control system.
For those who dare to push Invasion At its extreme range, there’s even a backup parachute release button – a fitting addition for a car with this level of raw power, tailor-made for showdowns on the drag strip.
