— Issues with the VinFast VF8 lane-keeping assist system have led the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to launch a federal investigation after receiving 14 complaints about the 2023-2024 VF8 SUVs.
More than 3,100 VinFast VF8 cars were included in the survey.
VinFast calls itself “Vietnam’s first global automaker” and offers four models in the U.S.
NHTSA said owners have complained about various issues with lane-keeping assist systems.
“The lane keeping assist never worked. Sometimes, even at 25 mph, it would veer to one side of traffic.”
“While driving this car, the steering wheel sometimes loses control and pulls me into another lane. When turning or merging into another lane, it automatically corrects and steers me into a lane I am not turning into, causing me to lose control of the direction I am traveling. Pulling harder on the steering wheel will attempt to automatically correct.”
The VF8 driver also told NHTSA that the SUV stalled on the highway and lost all power.
“They said the car just needed to be updated. The car was unsafe and needed to be recalled before another injury occurred.”
Owners complained about the lane-keeping assist system malfunctioning, having problems detecting lanes on the highway, drivers having difficulty overriding the system, and the system allegedly providing incorrect steering inputs.
NHTSA’s investigation will determine if there is a safety defect and whether the VinFast VF8 SUVs should be recalled.
