Volkswagen launches Tharu XR SUV

The Volkswagen Taigun has been an important model for the German automaker in India, helping to revive its sales. Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which it shares with the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Kushaq and Skoda Slavia, the Taigun has made a strong impact. Recently, Volkswagen launched another SUV in China, the Tharu XR, which is based on a stretched version of the same platform. The Tharu XR is 134 mm longer than the Taigun.

Despite the increase in length, the Tharu XR has the same wheelbase as the Taigun, with the extra length coming from longer overhangs. A new bumper gives it a fresh and timeless look compared to the Taigun. At the front, it gets a slim grille with an integrated LED light bar flanked by sleek LED headlights. The rear of the Tharu XR also shows clear differences, with redesigned taillights and a less upright trunk lid, making it look more premium.

Volkswagen has not yet revealed the interior details of the Tharu XR, but expect some tweaks compared to the Taigun. The SUV is likely to come with a larger touchscreen infotainment system and a more refined user interface. Other features may include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, ADAS, a powered tailgate, and powered ORVMs.

Engine and Powertrain

The Tharu XR will be available with two engine options: a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine. The turbocharged petrol engine will produce 160 hp and 250 Nm of torque, and both engines will be exclusively mated to a 7-speed DCT.

The launch of the Tharu XR by Volkswagen in China hints at a possible update for the Volkswagen Taigun in India, which could result in a facelift and incorporate some of the new design and feature enhancements seen on the Tharu XR.
