Water ingress into the door handle causes ID.4 doors to unlock automatically
September 10, 2024 17:10

- Volkswagen is recalling the ID.4 for a third time to fix doors that could open unexpectedly.
- Water that gets into the handle may reach the circuit board and prevent the door from opening.
- The recall affects nearly 100,000 vehicles, including those that have already been repaired.
When one door closes, another opens. That’s a little too real for Volkswagen, as the automaker is recalling 98,806 ID.4s whose doors could accidentally open while driving.
If this problem sounds familiar, it should, as it’s a recurring problem. As NHTSA explains, the latest recall is an expansion of the previous recalls 23V-312 and 23V-213, and vehicles repaired under those recalls will need to complete the new remedies.

So what’s the problem? The door handles on the 2021-2024 ID.4 “do not meet factory water-resistance specifications.” This is a problem because water can get into the printed circuit board, causing malfunctions including the “open command.”
While the 23V-312 and 23V-213 recalls date back to 2023, the safety recall report states that Volkswagen became aware of the complaints in February of this year, at which time the supplier took action. The supplier then investigated and found “water ingress and corrosion in the door handle electronics,” ultimately paving the way for the latest recall.

The issue has not resulted in any injuries or crashes, but Volkswagen received 135 warranty claims between June 2023 and May 2024.
The fix is still being finalized, but will ultimately involve dealers inspecting each door handle and replacing it with an improved part if necessary. The ID.4 will also get a software update to change the “door handle parameters.”
