Volkswagen to launch new Transporter, edging closer to Ford, offering diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric drive

Volkswagen Transporter T7 spy photos exposed: a box full of boring corporate synergies
  • The Volkswagen Transporter will debut this fall, and spy photographers have snapped photos of it ahead of time.
  • The van will be available with diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
  • In addition, two wheelbases will be offered as well as van and Kombi models.

Volkswagen has been teasing the Transporter T7 for what feels like an eternity, but the wait is about to end as the model is set to make its debut this September. While it’s still a few weeks away, spy photographers have snapped some new photos of the van.

The Transporter clearly reflects its Ford roots, it’s like a boring box with a little bit of Botox added to it. However, it’s been given a makeover, and we can see that its unique front fascia incorporates some elements of the ID. Buzz. The headlights are the most obvious change, but this van also has vertical air curtains on the outer edges.

The rest of the design is very similar to the Ford Transit Custom, but it looks like the Transporter will have unique taillights. While that remains to be seen, VW has confirmed the van will offer a 122-inch (3,100 mm) and 137.8-inch (3,500 mm) wheelbase, as well as a high roof. This will allow the T7 to hold up to 317.8 cubic feet (9 cubic meters) of cargo.

Stepping inside, drivers will find a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch infotainment system. There’s also a new steering wheel, an electronic parking brake, and a spacious center console that offers a wireless smartphone charger. The van also comes with USB-A, USB-C, and 12-volt ports and a “power hub” that can handle up to 400 watts. If that wasn’t enough, the plug-in hybrid and electric versions also come with an inverter with an output of 2.3 kilowatts.
