2025 Greater California accepts technology-focused upgrades including larger screens and more complex ADAs

Volkswagen offers a range of improvements to its largest RV, designed to make it more attractive to campers. This refreshed version of the California Family’s flagship model introduces an upgraded screen, better connectivity and new driver help features, among other changes.

Greater California was originally launched in 2019 and is based on the Volkswagen Crafter LCV. For the 2025 model, the most eye-catching update is the new standalone infotainment display. This screen is available in 10.4-inch or 12.9-inch sizes with Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility, making it easier for users to stay connected on the road.

Like the 2024 craftsman, Greater California now has options for digital instrument combinations and voice assistants, including Chatgpt Integration. Other updates include electronic handbrakes with automatic retention, redesigned gear levers and improved switching equipment. Volkswagen’s travel assistant can also enhance ADAS suites.

Practical and comfortable for campers

Inside, California has obtained a new portrait-oriented touch screen in the living area, reflecting the touch screen found in the smaller Multivan California. This Camper Control Panel makes it easier to access various features such as controlling assisted heating and adjusting ambient lighting. The California app has also been upgraded, allowing owners to monitor water levels, battery charging and other basic data directly from their smartphones.

Familiar exterior and layout

Visually, California hasn’t made any changes. The exterior remains almost the same, except for the updated badge at the rear. This model still comes in two configurations: the taller 600 and the longer 680. Both versions come with a kitchen, bathroom and a sleeping area with a choice of landscape or portrait layout.

Amenities include a 70-liter (2.5 cubic feet) refrigerator/fridge, a 110-LT (3.9 cubic feet) freshwater tank, two burner stoves, sink, shower, dining area and a double bed. Crews can also use a pair of folding chairs and a camping table that are stored in the rear wing door.

Engine and performance details

Volkswagen California continues to use the familiar 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder turbodiesel, which has been upgraded to meet the latest Euro VI HD HD emission standards. The engine produces 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 410 nm (302 lb-ft) of torque. Depending on the trim level, the power supply is sent to the front wheels or all four wheels (4motion) and an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Pricing and availability

The updated Greater California is available for ordering. In the UK, the California 600 starts at £84,046 ($108,800), while the Grand California 680 price is £86,800 ($112,300). The buyer also received a five-year warranty and roadside assistance.

California is part of a wider lineup of Volkswagen campers, which include the smaller Caddy California and California Campers. Sadly, these models are not available in North America. However, it has been reported that the California version of the electric ID.Buzz is in progress, although it launched its launch due to lower than expected demand for all-electric camps.
