Volvo temporarily discontinues C40 and renames several models

  • Volvo is renaming several models to better differentiate its lineup.
  • The Recharge moniker is being dropped as a handful of models adopt the “EX” prefix.
  • The EX30 and EX90 are new for 2025, but the C40 Recharge will be discontinued briefly.

Volvo America will launch two new electric crossovers in 2025, an updated XC90 and a slew of rebranded vehicles. The company has also dropped the Recharge name from all plug-in hybrids. From now on they will be simply called T8, a change Volvo says will reduce confusion between hybrids and electric cars.

Sticking with the name change, the electric XC40 Recharge is rebranded as the EX40, while the XC40 moniker will remain for the mild-hybrid model. The EX40 also has a slightly higher 205 kW DC fast charging capability and a larger 82 kWh battery on the dual-motor version.

The C40 Recharge will be discontinued in 2025, so there will be a brief hiatus. However, it will return as the EC40 for the 2026 model year. Volvo didn’t explain the reason behind the move, but the company sold just 1,420 C40s in the United States last year.

Back for the 2025 model year refresh, the EX30 is new in the U.S. with a starting price of $44,900. It has a 69 kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with 422 hp (315 kW / 428 PS) and 400 lb-ft (542 Nm) of torque. This allows the crossover to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.4 seconds and has an EPA range of 253 miles (407 km).

The EX90 is also new for 2025, and the U.S. model is built in Charleston, South Carolina. Starting at $79,995, buyers get a 111 kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS) and 568 lb-ft (769 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.7 seconds and have a range of 310 miles (499 km) on a single charge.

Finally, there is the facelifted 2025.5 XC90. Launched last September, it features a new front fascia and modern Quake headlights. The model also gets an updated interior with a new infotainment system, higher-quality materials and NVH improvements.

Pricing starts at $58,450, with the entry-level model making 247 hp (184 kW / 250 PS) and 266 lb-ft (360 Nm) of torque. It enables the all-wheel-drive crossover to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 7.3 seconds.
