Volvo XC90 driver rescued from wrecked SUV

A short video shows two seemingly different miracle results

Volvo XC90 driver pulled from wrecked SUV minutes before fire
  • A serious traffic accident occurred on the Phu My Bridge in Vietnam, resulting in several cars being burned.
  • A Volvo driver was pinned between a large truck and another car but somehow managed to survive.
  • Rescuers then pulled him out of the burning SUV.

Car crashes happen, but rarely do cars behave like the Volvo XC90 in this story. Not only was it completely destroyed by the force of the impact, but it was also completely burned up after the crash. Somehow, the driver survived two potentially fatal accidents, and bystanders captured his miraculous rescue on video.

The accident occurred on the Phu My Bridge in Vietnam. The slope of the bridge is about 4%, which is not steep, but it is enough to prevent the brakes of a 10-ton truck from failing and being unable to stop. As a result, it hit the eight cars in front of it.

Local reports say that despite the devastation, everyone survived, which is pretty incredible considering the video embedded below. In the video, we see the Volvo being wedged between a blue transport truck and a white SUV. Smoke billows from the back of the crushed car. Two emergency workers climb onto the hood and begin removing the windshield.

Finally, the driver’s hand came out of the gap. Two workers grabbed his wrist and pulled him out of the car as the fire grew. Their heroic actions may have been the reason the driver survived. Video footage shot later showed the car fully engulfed in flames.

Volvo also deserves some credit. Even though it was completely mangled, the fact that the driver was in good condition and climbed out says a lot. Volvo has long been a leader in safety technology, and in this case, it clearly succeeded. In fact, all of the vehicles involved managed to keep their passengers alive, which is amazing considering the extent of the damage.

Apparently, the traffic jam covered more than a mile of road leading to the bridge. The truck driver told authorities that the air tank responsible for the brake function exploded, so he was unable to slow down.
