We turned Alpine’s A390_β concept car into a BMW i4-Fighting

Forget crossovers, we believe the Alpine Sport Sedan will be a tastier way to rip through the canyons

  • While Alpine is chasing sales with the new A390_β SUV, we think a sports sedan better represents the brand.
  • Dual electric motors with V2G capabilities offer an ideal combination of performance and sustainability.
  • Key competitors in the electric sedan market include the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3 Performance.

The consensus is loud and clear – as evidenced by our comments section, most of you don’t agree with Alpine’s production-intended concept A390_β. The French brand’s PR team can call it a “sporty fastback” all they want, but the plastic cladding doesn’t lie. It’s a crossover through and through, going against the grain of the sports car maker’s heritage. This isn’t the Alps of rally legend and lightweight coupe fame; it’s Alpine’s crossover obsession following the market.

Yes, we get it: SUVs are crossovers, they’re cash cows, and consumers are going to snap them up. But what if, in an alternate reality, the A390 dropped a few inches, ditched the cladding, and gave its profile that of a true sports sedan? A true Alpine electric sedan with great performance – now that’s a concept worth getting excited about. Interested? Let’s take a closer look.

Stylish appearance

In this alternate reality, our reimagined A390_β takes the best elements of this concept and distills them into a streamlined, low-slung silhouette that fully embodies Alpine’s sporting DNA. Gone are the show car’s higher ground clearance and plastic cladding. Instead, the sedan has powerful proportions and a design language that echoes the iconic A110 sports car.

The front end reverses the concept’s overly smooth styling and reintroduces round headlights that recall Alpine’s past. To facilitate airflow, a “flybridge” is set up on the bonnet, while at the rear, things are made more symmetrical with a stylish shark fin that separates the rear glass and slim LED lighting. The sedan sits on huge racing wheels – call them cartoon-sized, but they really enhance the vehicle’s overall stance.

Interior innovation

While the concept car’s crazy sci-fi interior—along with its removable driver’s seat and rock-and-roll-style floorboards—probably won’t make it to production, we still expect a driver-focused cabin with seating for five Sport-themed seats and lightweight, high-quality materials such as Nappa and suede.

On the technology front, it is expected to feature an advanced infotainment system with OTA (wireless) connectivity and semi-hidden touch capacitive controls, a trick borrowed from the Nissan Ariya. The concept’s spacecraft vibe may be toned down, but elements like the minimalist dashboard and ergonomic controls will remain, prioritizing usability without losing its Alpine edge.

Beneath this sleeker exterior, the EV based on the AmpR Medium architecture will feature dual electric motors providing all-wheel drive and an active torque vectoring system to control the handling and stability equations. In true Alpine fashion, it will focus on agility and engagement rather than just brute force.

Although Alpai remains tight-lipped on specific power figures and range, its performance is expected to be better than that of its Nissan Ariya platform mate. It is also expected to provide on-board bidirectional charging (vehicle to grid), a feature that is increasingly sought after in electric vehicles.

So, what do you think?
