- The Scout Traveler SUV and Terra pickup combine retro charm with modern electrification.
- Production of the two rugged electric vehicle models is officially scheduled to begin in 2027.
- Fans have shared renderings of possible colors and retro-themed design uniforms.
It’s too early to tell whether Volkswagen’s ambitious revival of the Scout brand will succeed, but the buzz around its new Traveler SUV and Terra pickup suggests the gamble is already generating interest. Launched in October, these rugged models mark Scout’s return to the automotive realm, blending nostalgic design cues with cutting-edge electrification.
While the cars unveiled by Scout are technically just concepts, they have designs with production intent, and the finished cars should look nearly identical. Customers will have a range of colors to choose from when orders open, and these renderings preview some of the colors available, as well as liveries inspired by the original Scout models built by International Harvester.

The folks at Scout EV Forum created these renderings of the Traveler and Terra. Colors best suited for rugged SUVs and pickups include Dark Green/Forest Green, Tamarack Bronze, Concorde Blue and Burnt Orange. Scout has yet to confirm an official color palette for either vehicle, but hopefully it includes some paint jobs similar to these.
We particularly like the model with the special “Rallye” livery. This livery was offered on the original Scout and is designed in a white and black configuration that runs along the sides of the new-age model, complete with matching wing mirrors and painted roof. Given how popular the retro-themed finishes on the current Ford Bronco are, Scout may also try to attract the original model’s cult following.
Both the Traveler and Terra will feature battery-electric powertrains to meet growing demand for zero-emission vehicles. But Scout isn’t putting all its eggs in the all-electric vehicle basket. Recognizing the shift in consumer sentiment, the company is also developing extended range electric vehicle (EREV) variants. That version pairs an electric motor with a small gasoline engine that acts as a generator and is said to extend range to 500 miles (805 kilometers), well beyond the 350 miles (563 kilometers) of the all-electric model.
This dual approach allows the brand to appeal to both die-hard EV enthusiasts and those with range anxiety, especially in markets where charging infrastructure is still patchy. With a BEV model offering strong eco-credentials and an EREV variant offering greater flexibility, the Scout seems determined to cater to a wide range of drivers.
