Cars are more expensive than ever, but which automaker is asking more than they should?

- Automakers are now asking an average of $47,716 for a new vehicle, reflecting rising industry price trends.
- In some cases, price increases coincide with improvements or additions in functionality and justify the higher cost.
- In other cases, many brands charge more for cars that don’t offer equivalent value or improvements.
Car prices are actually down slightly this year compared to some months in 2022 and even 2023, but before we start celebrating, let’s not get carried away. Despite price drops, many automakers are still setting eye-popping MSRPs for their vehicles. Today we ask you this question. Which mainstream, near-premium, or high-end (we’re avoiding exotic and ultra-luxury here) automaker has the highest-priced cars?
The last sentence is key. We’re not just talking about a ridiculously overpriced model in an affordable lineup. Take Volkswagen for example. Sure, the ID.Buzz is pricey considering what it offers, but most of Volkswagen’s product line is quite competitive in its segment. So, to keep the discussion grounded, we’re looking at the entire brand, not just one or two offenders.

In many ways, Land Rover is now a luxury brand. Still, several of their SUVs seem to be reasonably priced. Pricing for the Evoque starts at just under $50,000. Velar starts at $61,500. The Discovery Sport is priced at $48,900, while the Defender is priced at just $56,900. Of course, these are just starting prices.
But that’s where “reasonable” pricing ends. Stack on any options or choose a trim level that’s not at the bottom of the ladder, and these cars can get expensive quickly. For example, the new Defender Octa starts at $152,000. Range Rover starts at $107,900. If that’s not crazy enough, consider this: Discovery Sport specs can cost more than $65,000.
Sitting somewhere between mainstream and premium, Infiniti is another contender worth considering. The QX55 seen here is what the brand calls a “crossover coupe” and starts at $50,150. If the specs are crazy enough, it’ll also cost you nearly $65,000. It’s far from the only criminal on the list. We generally liked the new QX80 in recent testing, but it’s still a very expensive product, starting at more than $82,000. Infiniti has even publicly stated that it wants buyers with seven-figure annual incomes.

Finally, let’s talk Jeep, because gone are the days of this brand’s rugged, affordable vehicles. The only thing cheaper on Jeep is the SUV, which is nowhere near as capable as the Wrangler. In fact, the automaker even understands the problem to an extent, as it’s cutting prices across the board. Let’s be honest, it’s not just a Jeep. You can throw any Stellantis brand into it and make a case for an overpriced product line.
Maybe it’s one of the growing EV-specific brands like Tesla, Polestar, Lucid, Rivian, and others.
