Which is the least threatening police car?

  • Ford police interceptors are common, but some departments use unconventional vehicles.
  • Now, many PDs choose electric cars such as Tesla, but some PDs even adopt the tiny Smart ForTwo.
  • Aside from exotic models like the BMW i3 and Toyota Prius, not all police cars are designed to be deterrents.

We see a lot of police cars on the road, so we’re generally not scared when we come across some weird vehicles. But every now and then a police car comes by that takes us by surprise – and the Smart ForTwo used by the Hamilton, Ontario police definitely fits that bill. It’s hard not to laugh when you see such a small, quirky vehicle dressed in full police car livery, trying to look serious.

Which brings us to our unexpected question for today: What is the least threatening police car you’ve ever seen?

While many departments have adopted the Ford Police Interceptor, there are always some that don’t comply. The reasons vary, and may be due to environmental concerns or they may simply need something that better suits their requirements.

The former has been the main driver of recent purchases, and we’ve seen a number of departments adopt EVs from Ford and Tesla. The Los Angeles Police Department also briefly used the BMW i3, though reportedly not in large numbers.

Before the electric car movement, the Fremont Police Department in California began using hybrid cars in 2009. At the time, they used Toyota Prius and Ford Fusion hybrids, neither of which were very exciting. Were they useful? Maybe. Were they scary? Not that scary.

The Crown Victoria dominated until it was finally discontinued more than a decade ago, leaving departments without many good options, as they could choose the Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan or the Chevrolet Impala, which was about as scary as a rental car.

So, after seeing all that, we’re curious – what’s the least threatening police car you’ve ever encountered?

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“5646c171 -cb6e-4e2c-8440-49013ca72758”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(“e7c4c913-3924-4b2d-9279-6c00984dd130”); } });
