Window Tint Laws for Illinois Residents

There are many benefits to having car window tints, and with the weather getting warmer, now is the perfect time to have your car tinted. Not only does tinting enhance the exterior of your car, it also protects your passengers and interior through UV protection and heat-blocking properties. There are a few things you should know before booking an appointment to have your car tinted.

This blog will cover tint laws for Illinois residents.

This varies from state to state, so if you are reading this and live outside of Illinois, be sure to check your local laws before wrapping your vehicle.

Important reminder:

While these are Illinois laws, many customers choose not to comply. You should use your own judgment. We offer films in a variety of tints, from 5% (Limousine) to 80% (Almost Clear), and can install any film you prefer (within reason).

This is just a guide and reference point.

Tone Depth for Sedan and Coupé:
  • windshield:
    Non-reflective tint is permitted on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
  • Front side windows:
    More than 35% of the light must be allowed in.
  • Rear side windows:
    More than 35% of the light must be allowed in.
  • Rear window:
    More than 35% of the light must be allowed in.
Tone depth for SUVs and vans:
  • windshield:
    Non-reflective tint is permitted on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
  • Front side windows:
    More than 50% of the light must be allowed in.
  • Rear side windows:
    Any darkness can be used.
  • Rear window:
    Any darkness can be used.

Other Illinois window tinting rules and regulations:

  • Side view mirrors:
    If the rear windows are tinted, dual mirrors are required.
  • Restricted Colors:
    Illinois dyeing law does not specifically prohibit dyeing of any color.
  • Hue changes:
    5% difference.
  • sticker:
    No stickers are needed to identify legal coloring.
  • Medical exceptions:
    Illinois does allow medical exemptions for special stains. Please refer to your state’s laws for more details on the specific terms of the exemption.
  • Penalties:
    A minor offense carries a fine of $50-$500. A second or subsequent offense is a Class C misdemeanor, carrying a fine of $100-$500.
