The last 911 SC/RS was a true rally car that also happened to be road legal

- The Porsche Type 954, one of only 21 cars ever produced, is now available for purchase.
- Also known as the 911 SC RS, it is a street-legal race car with a true racing heritage.
- The starting bid is over $3 million, making it a truly unique collectible.
It’s relatively difficult to convince die-hard Porsche enthusiasts, but the Type 954 is a car that can do it. This car is one of the most hard-core 911 models ever produced by the Porsche factory in Stuttgart. Now, if you’re willing to pay $3,000,000, it can be yours.
This 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS Gruppe B is being auctioned through Broad Arrow Auctions and is sometimes referred to as the “Evolutionserie.” The automaker built this car and twenty others like it specifically for racing. In fact, it was once raced and is still suitable for road use today.

You can think of it as a 911 SC, but for World Rallycross Group B competition. Therefore, it uses the body of the 911 Turbo. The doors, fenders and hood are all made of aluminum. The 935’s Lolipop seats keep the occupants in place, while the 917-derived brakes slow the beast down.
That’s good, because the engine is apparently capable of producing 270 horsepower (201 kilowatts), and the entire car weighs just 2,160 pounds (980 kilograms). Remarkably, this was the last SC/RS ever built. It competed in the WRC Tour de France in 1984 and finished 14th, the highest of any Porsche entered in the race.
Broad Arrow notes that the car’s racing pedigree and street-legal credentials put it in good company. Both the 904 Carerra GTS and the 911 R share the same dual nature.
Interestingly, this car was auctioned on Bring A Trailer back in May. Bidding rose to $756,000 before the auction ended unceremoniously. Will it actually break the six-figure mark and hit guidance close to what Broad Arrow suggests? We’ll all have to tune in as it spreads across Chattanooga on October 12th to find out.
