World ECR | Japan expands sanctions on Russian industry

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced on January 10 that Japan would ban the export of 335 industrial products to Russia and impose new restrictions on companies from six countries suspected of supporting Moscow’s defense industry.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said the cabinet approved measures to ban the export of “special vehicle engines and parts, scooters, audio equipment, tools, valves” and other goods that could strengthen Russia’s industrial base. These restrictions are effective from January 23.

“In light of the current international situation surrounding Ukraine, and in order for Japan to contribute to international efforts for world peace,” the government will also impose export controls on companies in the United Arab Emirates, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand and Turkey, the ministry said. Starting January 17th.

The measures were implemented through changes to Japan’s export trade control order, following Tokyo’s decision last week to freeze the assets of 11 Russian individuals and 29 organizations, including Vladimir Artyakov of state company Rostec and Alrosa CEO Pavel Marinychev.
