  • The SU7 Ultra Prototype prototype surpassed the Green Hell in just 6 minutes and 46.874 seconds.
  • The road-going model accelerates to 62 mph in 1.98 seconds and accelerates from 62 mph in just 101 feet (30.8 meters).
  • Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has received more than 3,600 pre-orders within 10 minutes of its launch.

Xiaomi broke the Nürburgring four-door car record with its Mi SU7 super prototype and launched the production version of its flagship SU7 at an event in Beijing. If you needed more proof of how serious the consumer electronics giant is about tackling the fastest electric car on the planet, this is it.

The first is the “circle run”. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun hinted at the achievement on social media, revealing that the electric car completed the lap in just 6 minutes and 46.874 seconds. It has now been confirmed that the SU7 Ultra Prototype, driven by British driver David Pittard, who won the 2023 Nürburgring 24 Hours, did indeed put down the challenge in that impressive time. This makes the car more than 20 seconds faster than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT.

Even more impressive is that it was achieved in a single attempt. Additionally, the car loses power for about 10 seconds, a moment that can be seen around 4:15 in the video. If this hadn’t happened, things would have been faster.

At a press conference confirming the car’s Nürburgring feat, Xiaomi also took the wraps off the production model. It’s unclear why the road-going model isn’t the car to tackle the Green Hell, but it promises many of the same performance credentials as the prototype, even if it’s not quite as extreme.

Like the prototype, the SU7 Ultra features three electric motors delivering 1,526 horsepower. The system consists of two Xiaomi flagship V8s motors and one V6s motor. It gives the car a significant power advantage over the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire. Xiaomi says it can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.98 seconds without sliding out, rocket to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 5.86 seconds, and reach a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h).

Powering these engines is a CATL Kirin 2.0 battery, and despite being extremely performance-focused, the car is claimed to have a range of 391 miles (630 kilometers) on the CLTC cycle. Xiaomi has comprehensively upgraded the cooling system of SU7, improving the performance of the compressor, water pump, cooling fan, and radiator, so that SU7 can show its talents on the track. It can reportedly run two consecutive laps around the Nürburgring without overheating.

brakes, suspension, aerodynamics

Any four-door sedan with more than 1,500 horsepower needs powerful brakes, and the SU7 Ultra fits the bill. It comes standard with carbon-ceramic brake discs at all four corners and can stop from 62 mph in 101 feet (30.8 m). The front disc measures 16.9 inches (430 mm) and is the largest carbon fiber disc currently in a production sedan. Akebono supplies the brake calipers, which consist of a six-piston unit at the front and a four-piston unit at the rear.

The upgrades don’t stop there. Xiaomi has equipped it with new dual-chamber air springs and dampers, or if customers prefer, the SU7 Ultra can be equipped with Bilstein Evo T1 shock absorbers that offer 10 levels of compression and rebound adjustment. Sophisticated torque vectoring is also standard, regulating the motor’s power up to 500 times per second.

Visually, you’ll notice that the production-ready SU7 Ultra isn’t as extreme as the prototype. It lacks the car’s racing-spec rear wing and has a smaller spoiler. The front end is also more restrained, but does stand out among smaller versions of the electric sedan thanks to a new splitter and enlarged air intakes. Other upgrades include an active rear diffuser that can be adjusted while driving and new skirts. The car can provide up to 285 kilograms (628 pounds) of downforce.

Several internal enhancements round out the entire package. These include a newly designed flat-top and flat-bottom steering wheel with a 12 o’clock marker and is wrapped in Alcantara with carbon fiber accents. The steering wheel also includes a bright red Boost button. Elsewhere, shoppers will find new Alcantara components in the cabin trim, and the user interface of the dashboard, head-up display and infotainment display has been customized for a sportier look. An app called Racetrack Master has also been added, allowing drivers to record their lap times and view key performance parameters on the move.

First customer deliveries are expected in March 2025. Prices start at 814,900 yuan (approximately $114,000), and Xiaomi received 3,680 refundable deposits within the first 10 minutes of the car’s launch.
