— Five years after opening, a federal safety investigation has concluded and more than 12 million vehicles equipped with ZF-TRW air bag control units have been recalled.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation to determine whether air bag failures in serious crashes were caused by safety-related defects.
These models are included in the ZF-TRW airbag survey.

All vehicles are equipped with a ZF-TRW airbag control unit for the electronic control unit (ECU) that receives signals from crash sensors installed on the vehicle. This system is responsible for deploying the airbags and seat belt pretensioners in the event of a crash.
NHTSA sent information request letters to multiple automakers, including FCA, Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi and Toyota.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is aware of an electrical overload issue that causes harmful signals in the crash sensor wiring.
Hyundai Motor is recalling 155,000 2011 Sonata vehicles, Kia Motors is recalling about 507,000 vehicles and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling about 1.9 million vehicles due to air bag issues.
NHTSA said the investigation lasted five years to monitor air bag and vehicle performance in the field, but the government found no reports of vehicles not included in existing air bag recalls.
Safety regulators have concluded a five-year air bag investigation based on the recall.
