what will fall off Challenge your paradigm more? Electric Plymouth GTX? Or a Teutonic-based Japanese car that pays homage to Richard Petty?
You may be familiar with the Toyota GR Supra, a revival sports car based on (and more popular than) the BMW Z4. It’s been on the market for five years and comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 3-liter turbocharged V6. From the start, an eight-speed automatic was the only transmission available, but a six-speed manual finally appears in 2023. By 2025, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be discontinued.
At the SEMA Show, Toyota unveiled a series of concepts to satisfy the needs of car fans visiting the Las Vegas event. What is particularly noteworthy is that super bird The Tribute is a GR Supra concept car designed to honor The King (aka Richard Petty) and the 1970 Road Runner Superbird, the car that brought him back to Plymouth after a year at Ford. “Our vision was to recreate the beauty of the iconic Superbird in the form of a modern GR Supra, and the Suprabird was born!” said the former top gear usa Host and Toyota Ambassador Rutledge Wood.
If it reminds you of Lightning McQueen, you’re not alone. In addition to the custom body kit, this Supra also features a cold air intake and a custom cat-back performance exhaust. In order to reduce body roll, we installed shock absorbers. A set of custom blue 19-inch wheels are wrapped in sticky Continental tires, although there’s no word on what the drift team has to say about this.
Aside from the “Petty Blue” hue and hand-painted ’43 livery, this GR Supra actually has a genuine connection to Richard Petty – Toyota Gazoo Racing has a partnership with the Legacy Motor Club, formerly known as Petty GMS Motorsports (and prior to that, Richard Petty Motorsports) was owned by Richard Petty.
“I would like to welcome Petty to the Toyota Gazoo Racing family, celebrate his association with the Legacy Car Club and pay tribute to the Petty family’s 75 years in racing,” Wood added.
To purists, this combination is like some kind of Dr. Moreau concoction. For its creators, it’s a celebration of the past and present. And if you can’t make it to Vegas to see this Frankenstein in person, you’ll be happy to know that it will be rendered as a Hot Wheels die-cast.
