- The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been revealed from patent drawings and spy photos.
- The styling and interior updates will be heavily inspired by the 1 Series hatchback.
- Like the 1 Series, it will ride on an updated version of the existing platform.
Although BMW calls the new 1 Series the hatchback’s fourth generation, it’s actually a substantially updated version of its predecessor. The mechanically related BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will soon follow the same recipe to improve its appeal against rival Mercedes-Benz CLA.

Our exclusive renderings depict an M Sport version of the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, borrowing styling cues from the hatchback.

The unofficial illustrations are based on patent drawings, discovered by our Autoweek colleagues. The patent drawings show the compact sedan from all angles, revealing most of the major styling upgrades compared to its predecessor.

Like the new 1 Series, the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will retain the same proportions, but much of the sheetmetal will be redesigned. Unlike the outgoing model and its unique front-end treatment, the new model appears to adopt the 1 Series’ look, including the grille, headlights, and bumper. The rear end will be updated with sharper LED taillights inspired by the X2 and a sportier bumper.

Interestingly, the M Sport trim of the 2 Series Gran Coupe is differentiated from the standard model not only by the more aggressive bumpers, but also by the door handles. These look similar to those on newer BMWs, such as the mechanically related X2, which makes us wonder why the automaker didn’t apply them to all trims of the 2 Series Gran Coupe.
Another small but important update is the slight tweaking of the lines on the C-pillar, attempting to bring back BMW’s signature ‘Hofmeister corner’.

Given the changes to the exterior, it’s no surprise that the interior will likely be in line with the updates to the new BMW 1 Series hatchback. The highlight will be the new curved fascia housing a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The redesigned center console will likely have far fewer buttons than before, with details like new air conditioning vents and metallic trim accentuating its upscale look.
Updated basis
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will ride on an updated version of the existing FWD architecture that underpins the 1 Series, X1, X2 and several Mini models. Depending on the market, powertrain options could include diesel, petrol and mild-hybrid engines, mated exclusively to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The range-topping model is the M235 xDrive, which will drop the “i” from its name. Like the M135 xDrive, power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 312 hp (233 kW / 317 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.
BMW has yet to confirm a debut date for the updated 2 Series Gran Coupe. However, based on the fact that our spy photographers have been spotting camouflaged prototypes for over a year now, we expect the new model to arrive in 2024.
