Daily Pick: 1966 Ford Mustang

The Original Mustang Pony Car When it was introduced 60 years ago, the car was an undisputed success: within two years of its launch, Ford’s three assembly plants produced nearly 1.3 million vehicles.

A 1966 Ford Magazine ad read, “What do you do after you’ve built a million Mustangs? Start with the two million!” By 1966, Ford had diversified the Mustang model to include hardtop, convertible, and fastback models, with both inline-six and V8 powertrains. No wonder the car was so popular and a sales success.

Today’s pick is a 1966 Ford Mustang, for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Las Cruces, New Mexico. (Click on the link to view the listing)

“The car has been well-maintained throughout and has undergone additional restoration in recent years,” the listing reads. “The next owner won’t have to think about spending a lot to keep this car in near-perfect condition as many parts have been updated.”

The Mustang Sport caught on as other manufacturers fought to capture this popular segment—among other competitors, the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird entered the market within a few years. Meanwhile, the Mustang’s interior, grille, and badges were updated several times, giving the product a fresh look year after year that kept buyers coming back.

I particularly like the burgundy vinyl interior on this car, which comes with colored seatbelts, Mustang-branded floor mats, and a wood steering wheel. The five-digit odometer reportedly shows 4,550 miles, and the seller claims an actual mileage of 104,550.

Up front is a 289cid V8 fed by a two-barrel carburetor, with power sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The seller says recent maintenance includes an oil change and an alignment. But beyond that, the seller gives a lengthy list in the second paragraph of the listing: Work included replacement of the clutch, thermostat, spark plugs and wires, air filter, fuel line, brakes, wheel cylinders, differential fluid, and suspension. The air conditioning is also reportedly in working order.

“It retains the look, feel and sound of the muscle car era,” the seller says.

Asking price is $29,500 or best offer.
