Hyundai Tucson is the first Hyundai car to undergo crash test at Bharat NCAP
The Hyundai Tucson has received a 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP, making it the first Hyundai model to be tested under the safety assessment program. This milestone puts the Tucson alongside a growing list of SUVs from brands like Mahindra and Tata that have received similar accolades.
safety score
Tested in its top-spec 2.0-litre petrol AT Signature model, the Tucson achieved a commendable score of 30.84 out of 32 points for adult occupant protection, ranking third in BNCAP’s AOP scores to date. The top scorers are Tata Punch EV (31.46/32) and Mahindra Thar Roxx (31.09/32). In terms of child occupant protection, the Tucson scored 41 out of 49 points, demonstrating its focus on ensuring the safety of young passengers.
Key findings from the crash tests include:
- Adult occupant protection: The Tucson performed well in the front-offset deformable barrier test (14.84/16.00) and received perfect scores in the side movable deformable barrier test (16.00/16.00). In the side bar crash test, the SUV received an “OK” rating. Protection for the driver and passenger’s head and neck was rated good, while protection for the chest and feet was deemed adequate.
- Child occupant protection: The SUV received perfect scores in the dynamic test (24/24) and the CRS installation test (12/12). Two child dummies (representing children aged 18 months and 3 years respectively) were tested using rear-facing seats secured by ISOFIX anchor points and support legs.
safety equipment
The test model is manufactured in India for the domestic market and complies with AIS-100 pedestrian protection specifications. The Tucson comes with standard safety features such as six airbags, three-point seat belt reminders for all passengers, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX anchors for the rear outboard seats. Other safety technology includes hill hold control, a tire pressure monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and Level 2 ADAS.
Observe and compare
While the Tucson’s score is impressive, BNCAP did not provide specific details on the stability of the body shell and footwell areas during crash testing. This leaves some room for interpretation regarding its structural integrity under extreme conditions. Additionally, the level of detail provided in the child protection report is not as comprehensive as that provided by Global NCAP, limiting a deeper understanding of the safety performance of child dummies.
Market background
It is worth noting that the Tucson model tested this time is not the latest facelift version on the international market. The current price of Tucson in India ranges between Rs. 29 Lakhs Rs 36 Lakhs (ex-showroom).
