Kerala has been experiencing heavy rains in the past week. Kochi is facing waterlogging as most of the rivers are swollen. The rains have severely affected people’s lives. Offices are still open and some have asked their employees to come to work. Travelling or commuting in the rains is very difficult. Here is a video from Kochi showing a group of people staying in a hotel returning to their hotel in a JCB.
The video was shared by Trollathi Instagram page. In the video, we can see waterlogging on the road in a residential area in Kakkanad area of Kochi. The narrow roads in the area are extremely difficult to navigate once waterlogged. There are open drains in the area, which pose a threat to commuters.
In these conditions, traversing these areas on foot or by car becomes a challenge. Employees returning home from work may be surprised to see so much water on the road and start considering other ways to return to their dormitories and homes. It is not clear whether the trapped personnel had a backhoe loader (commonly known as a JCB) or if it just happened to be on site when they needed it.
In the video, we can see several girls and men sitting in the bucket of the loader. It is not clear if anyone was sitting in the cab with the driver. The JCB driver carefully drove through the flooded streets and dropped them off at the hotel. The JCB or backhoe loader has enough ground clearance, which reduces the possibility of getting stuck. Even if it gets stuck, it can be recovered using the front and rear hydraulic arms.
This is not the first time we have seen something like this in India. Desperate times call for desperate measures. The only goal of all those in the JCB was to return home safely. While many may consider this action too extreme, it seems they had no choice but to do it.
Driving or riding a bicycle on flooded roads is extremely dangerous and there are a few things to be aware of: Never drive on flooded roads as the chances of vehicle damage are higher in such situations.
Water can enter the cabin through the air intake and even into the engine, causing the car to stall. If your car stalls in water, never try to restart it, as this will only cause further damage.
Even if you are driving on familiar roads, always remain alert as rain can damage the road, increasing the risk of losing balance and falling into the water.
Also, try to avoid taking new routes or unfamiliar roads during this period to avoid getting into trouble. During the rainy season, try to avoid traveling and go out only when it is absolutely necessary. Also, try to find alternative routes and avoid driving through flooded roads.
