New and existing Porsches are taking to YouTube because riding shotgun is so boring
  • Porsche has updated the 911, Taycan and Panamera to integrate YouTube into the infotainment system.
  • Models equipped with the optional passenger screen can play YouTube videos while the vehicle is in motion.
  • The app only works on the 911 when the car is stationary, as it doesn’t have a passenger screen.

For front-seat passengers in new Porsche models craving some entertainment, Zuffenhausen has a solution: YouTube. Yes, following the recent launch of the YouTube app on the new Macan Electric, 911, Taycan, Cayenne and Panamera models will be updated to include YouTube.

In models with a passenger display, such as Taycan, Cayenne and Panamera, you can watch YouTube even while the car is moving. In these cases, content is limited to the passenger screen to ensure the driver remains focused on the road.

For the iconic Porsche 911 without a passenger display, YouTube playback is limited to the central infotainment screen and only works when the car is stationary. Likewise, when any compatible model is docked, the app switches to the main display, allowing for a shared viewing experience.

All new deliveries will come with YouTube pre-installed, while owners of existing cars can get it via a free over-the-air software update. While most owners and passengers will probably only use the system for entertainment purposes, Porsche itself has a tutorial series on YouTube that explains important vehicle features.

Porsche isn’t the only automaker adding YouTube to its infotainment system. For example, all cars with Google built-in will receive YouTube in the coming years, and Volvo and Polestar models have already started doing so. Other brands offering cars with Google built-in include Chevrolet, Honda and Renault. Mercedes-Benz has also struck a licensing deal with Google to add YouTube to its MB.OS operating system.

Rivian, meanwhile, jumped on the trend earlier this year by adding YouTube and Google Cast to its R1S and R1T models. Like Porsche’s central display unit, Rivian’s system only works when the vehicle is stationary. Even so, it’s still a welcome addition for EV owners who spend time at public charging stations.
