Next-generation Mercedes S-Class to offer electric and combustion engine models, EQS

The current EQS and S-Class will be updated in 2025 and 2026 respectively, while their successors are not expected to be launched until 2030

Next-generation Mercedes S-Class to offer both electric and combustion engine models, EQS to be phased out
  • Mercedes wants to unify the S-Class and EQS flagship into a single model line in the future.
  • The eighth-generation S-Class is expected to be launched in 2030, offering both ICE and EV powertrain options.
  • The EQS will receive a major update in 2025, while a facelifted S-Class will follow in 2026.

Mercedes reportedly plans to merge the S-Class and EQS sedans into a single model range, offering both EV and ICE powertrain options over the next decade. The next generation of the German flagship is expected to arrive in 2030, with the existing EQS and S-Class sedans due to be fully updated in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The dual nature of the future S-Class has been confirmed by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius, who said: “In the future there will be two S-Classes – one with combustion engines and one with electric.” The two versions are expected to feature similar exterior and interior designs, although they will most likely be based on different architectures.

Despite earlier rumors that the MB.EA Large architecture would be scrapped, Kallenius said it is still under development. According to Autocar, the platform will underpin the all-electric S-Class, while the ICE models will use an updated version of the current MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) chassis.

In terms of styling, earlier comments from design chief Robert Lesnik suggest Mercedes’ future ICE and EV ranges will have strong visual links. This strategy was introduced with the updated G-Class and sounds similar to what BMW is doing with the 5 Series/i5 and 7 Series/i7.

In addition to the S-Class/EQS merger, one insider said Mercedes will likely go the same route for the successor to the E-Class/EQS sedan. This would allow the automaker to benefit from economies of scale, as the S-Class and E-Class ranges have a lot in common from a technology perspective.

The changes to Mercedes’ future product line-up are expected as the company struggles to meet its electric vehicle sales targets, pushing them further into the future. More specifically, Mercedes wants electric vehicles to account for 50% of its sales mix by 2030, as opposed to the earlier 2025 target. In a similar context, Kallenius recently confirmed that the automaker will invest more in internal combustion powertrains, making them sell for much longer than initially expected.

Upcoming updates for the current S-Class and EQS

Poor sales of the current S-Class and EQS recently forced Mercedes to cut production at its Sindelfingen plant in Germany. Sales of the internal combustion flagship fell 22% in the first half of 2024, while demand for electric vehicles was not amazing. However, this problem can be solved by the upcoming facelift, which will make these models more popular with buyers.

The current generation of the S-Class (W223) has been around since 2020. Normally, Mercedes would have introduced a facelifted model in 2024, but the facelift has been pushed back to 2026. This is in line with the model’s longer projected lifespan, which would need to last until the end of the decade.

The updated S-Class, which has been spotted by our spy photographers, is expected to feature a redesigned front and rear end, as well as more technology in the cabin and more advanced autonomous driving features. The powertrain lineup is likely to carry over but will be upgraded to enable it to comply with stricter emissions regulations.

The all-electric EQS, on the other hand, was initially launched in 2021 and received a minor update in 2024. However, a more comprehensive facelift with a focus on technology is expected in the second half of 2025. The updated model will reportedly use a significantly modified version of the existing EVA2 architecture, with improvements in various aspects of electrification.

The new platform will allegedly feature 800V technology (up from 400V), allowing for faster charging capabilities. Meanwhile, the new battery chemistry will reportedly increase range by 37 miles (60 km), for a maximum of 535 miles (860 km) per charge. Another improvement is expected to involve the electric powertrain, with an in-house-developed eATS2.0 unit and a two-speed gearbox replacing the existing Siemens Valeo electric motor and single-speed gearbox.
