MCACN Special Topic: The Troika of Hemis
There are people Some people like to claim that other cars are faster, but vehicles powered by the 426 Hemi are the measure of muscle car performance and appeal. No other engine of the era could match the strength, power potential or mechanical performance of the RB engine with its hemispherical combustion chamber. We captured three 1968-70 B-bodies at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN). 1968 Plymouth GTX Chrysler Corporation redesigned the midsize B-body in 1968, bringing a modern feel to a series of cars dating back to 1962. Plymouth's Belvedere range featured tall character lines above the wheel wells that gave it a sporty feel, while one called the Road Runner changed expectations for performance cars on the market. 1969 Dodge Coronet R/T On the Dodge, "Coke bottle" shaped rear fenders with simulated air intakes (molded into the body) also lend a certain sportiness, but don't look like the badge-engineered Plymouth. Of course, the Charger takes the Coke…
Recall: Alfa Romeo cars’ brake pedals may come off
Chrysler is recalling 2,100 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles. December 23, 2024 — Alfa Romeo Drivers should watch for a loose brake pedal before releasing the brake pedal and use the parking brake only to stop. It is because of this possibility that we have recalled approximately 2,100 2019-2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles. According to Fiat Chrysler, the fastener connecting the brake pedal to the brake booster may cause the brake pedal to separate from the brake booster. “Due to misalignment of the tightening station, the connection between the piston and push rod connecting the brake pedal to the brake booster may become loose.” — chrysler According to Chrysler, mechanical coupling of the brake pedal and brake booster cannot be guaranteed if the piston and pushrod are completely separated. The driver has no choice but to try to stop the vehicle using the electronic parking brake switch. A loose brake pedal is a…
More than 86,000 Jeeps recalled over backup cameras
2024 Jeep Wagoneer, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles. December 24, 2024 — The Jeep backup camera recall affects more than 86,000 2024 Jeep Wagoneer, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles. Like many recalls in 2024, this one is caused by a software issue, specifically with the Jeep backup camera module. The issue caused the rearview camera image to malfunction. In July, engineers noticed a fault with the rearview camera on the Jeep. In addition to making it more difficult for drivers to reverse, the camera malfunction violates federal safety standards. More than 7,000 Jeeps have been recalled in Canada. FCA dealers will update the backup camera module software after the Jeep recall letter is sent out on January 21, 2025. Jeep owners can call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask for backup camera recall number D5B. Separately, Fiat Chrysler is recalling approximately 300 Mopar rearview camera modules with…
2024 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals
during holidays It's already started! For most of the country, Thanksgiving begins with Thanksgiving, but for muscle car enthusiasts, it begins with the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN). MCACN has been around for more than a decade and is located not far from O'Hare Airport in suburban Chicago, making it an easy place to get in and out of. However, if that's what you do, you might learn your lesson and decide to stay at a hotel across the street from the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center because there are so many jaw-droppingly good things inside that you'll want to spent two days there. ClassicCars.com Journal can show you what you're missing. To paraphrase Bette Davis, buckle up because this is going to be a great ride. Detroit Steel Tubing was contracted to provide $3,400 worth of modifications to a 1963 Ford F-100 pickup truck, including a dual-quad 427. This is the only known modified pickup truck. After a…
Automakers that allow vehicles to undergo rigorous testing
even under normal circumstancesreporters’ vehicles passed by a lot. When I lived in Texas, I remember a guy who worked for News Fleet Management Services telling me that the two most commonly replaced items were windshields and tires. When a specialized vehicle travels as intended or beyond its usual test radius, the potential for significant damage increases significantly. Fortunately, some automakers understand the risks and are willing to take them to demonstrate what their products can do. Below, I've listed some specific examples where car companies have played it safe while testing their models. On Tracks: 2018 Ford Mustang GT, 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and 2019 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack In 2017, I covered the ChumpCar World Series at Circuit of the Americas. One of the racers I interviewed for my story happened to own a small track south of Austin, Texas. I quickly got the bright idea and asked him if I could test the acceleration, handling…
A place for your dukes to play
i have my sister Well trained. Whenever she stumbles upon an old car, she'll send me pictures and text me, "I saw a 4-4-2 today!" or something like that. It had been a while since she'd sent me anything, so I was delighted when she came to Coote's store in Virginia last weekend and showed me the automotive treasures inside. If you remember, actor Ben Jones played Kurt on the adorable TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard." After the show was canceled in 1985, Jones ran for Congress in Georgia's 4th Congressional District. Although he lost, Jones was given a chance to rematch with the same (corrupt) incumbent official and won in a landslide. After being ousted a few years later, he returned to Hollywood to star in several movies, as well as two "Dukes of Hazzard" reunions. In the late 1990s, Jones and his wife moved to Virginia. In 1999, they created Cooter's Museum and Theme Store "The Dukes…

Pick of the Day: 1965 Chrysler Newport Convertible
Chrysler Corporation was The Chrysler brand was going through some tough times in the early 1960s, but not as hard as its cheaper siblings. When the C-body debuted in 1965, Chrysler was able to move forward with optimism in a way it had not been able to do for eight years. Our daily pick, a 1965 Chrysler Newport convertible, is one of those cars that shines. It is listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Farmingdale, New York. (Click the link to view the list) The 1957 Chrysler cars were outstanding because of their beautiful styling and engineering. Put a Buick next to it, and the GM car clearly looks shabby in comparison. However, quality problems plagued the entire Chrysler Corporation, and sales in 1958 suffered from reputation and economic decline. The redesigned 1959 car wasn't bad, but it pales in comparison to GM's all-new cars. Chrysler attempted to rectify the problems with the 1960 model year with…
Random car trivia to kill time
We at The ClassicCars.com The Journal is currently bringing you highlights from the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Fall Auction, as well as our usual AutoHunter and ClassicCars.com articles. So, at this moment, how about we listen to some random car trivia? You can surprise your friends, or post it on social media and see if anyone gets surprised and angry - yes, that seems to be an unfortunate byproduct of discussing cars online. This 1969 Ford Cobra comes with hubcaps without trim rings. Hubcaps and wheel coversI used to use these two interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Note that this hubcap covers the entire wheel, hence the name "wheel cap." If you think about it, it's simple: a wheel cap covers the entire wheel, whereas a hubcap may only cover the hub. A "poverty cap" is a hubcap, but a full wheel disc (pictured above) is a wheel cover. Rally II with decorative ring Rally II without trim ring…
Forget Charger Daytona, Mopar Teases Hot Electric Muscle
Mopar can finally show off a concept originally slated to be shown at last year's show Mopar showed off a new electric muscle car for SEMA. The brands haven't revealed much, but the concept was originally planned to debut at last year's show before Stellantis withdrew due to the UAW strike. Not much is known about the model, but it could be an electric model from the '60s or '70s. For better or worse, the era of electric muscle cars has arrived. Stellantis isn't resting on its laurels, however, as the company showcased a new concept at the SEMA show. While it would be natural to assume that Dodge wants to show off the Charger Daytona, that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead, judging by the teaser images, we might see an electric mod. More: Stellantis previews electric concept car for SEMA 2023 That remains to be seen, but the automaker says: "What does the future of legendary muscle…

Early days In the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race, David Dudek and his son Dave will be in attendance and using their cars to uphold Chrysler Corporation's reputation. It had been so long ago that I don't remember what car or engine it was, but a few years later Dave started naming himself after his trusty Hermie. FAST racing developed into its own thing as some racers started taking advantage of the rules, and Dave was at the forefront of what the Hemi could do with stock parts (spoiler alert: faster than many modified Hemi's). Today, Dave brings his expertise and gravitas to fill the Mopar needs of other enthusiasts. Is a vehicle speeding past a greeting or an attack?
If you have ever driven When you're driving a high-performance car (especially a flashy one) on a public road, you may encounter people driving similar cars zipping past you at unnecessary speeds or showing off their car's performance in various ways. I've been there before. I thought I knew what it meant, but now I'm not so sure. Image credit: Ford I started noticing this behavior a few years ago while driving various media vehicles. The first incident I remember was in Austin, Texas. I was driving a 2015 Ford Mustang GT, waiting for the light ahead to turn from red to green. Before the light turned green, a guy in an older Mustang (maybe an S197?) zipped by on the left. Maybe he was in a hurry and didn't see my test car. Maybe he drives this way all the time. Or maybe he wanted to send a message to Mustang fans. Photo credit: Stellantis The next time something…

The recalled vehicles are 2019 and 2021-2024 Ram 1500 trucks equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) control module that may have a software error. When starting the truck, Ram truck owners will see illuminated warning lights, including ABS, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning lights. Featured Car Hunter Networkan online auction platform operated by ClassicCars.com, is auctioning this 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. The Road Runner is one of the true icons of the Mopar muscle car. By the late 1960s, the perception of muscle cars as cheap performance cars had changed, and over the years these cars became increasingly expensive. Plymouth introduced the Road Runner as a return to a simpler, more basic, more affordable high-performance midsize car. Plymouth paid Warner Bros. $50,000 for the use of the Road Runner name, the "beep" horn, and the cartoon characters of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. In addition, Plymouth paid $10,000 to develop the horn. The Road Runner featured here is powered by a reportedly numbers-matching 383ci V8 engine mated to a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. It's finished in special-order Omaha Orange paint with a black vinyl interior and is being offered now by the selling dealer with a clear title. The car features power…
