by the time As you read this, I will have spent the week at the Barrett-Jackson 2025 Scottsdale Auction. That’s not the only game in town, however – AutoHunter has tons of cars up for bid every day. This makes it easier for me to curate my AutoHunter picks, considering that AutoHunter doesn’t have over 2,000 cars to choose from like Barrett-Jackson. How lucky I am!
But choosing four was no easy task. Oh no, another Chevy! Or maybe the photographer left something to be desired. or. . . It covers all areas. Nonetheless, I think the following four should have broad appeal to most collectors. Which one will you choose?
1965 Buick Skylark
Full of sportiness and style, Skylark is the leader in the A-body series, above the Special and Special Deluxe. When you choose the Skylark, you’ll notice extensive use of bright accents and full-width taillights. The Gran Sport package was also new, but most people opted for the 300ci Wildcat 310, which had 210 horsepower.
This boat comes with optional bucket seats, Super Turbo automatic transmission, wheel covers with spinners, and a CD player in the glove box so you can cruise to the Drifter when heading to the coast.
1970 Mercury Cougar XR-7
As a second-generation Cougar, the ’70s don’t hold as much appeal to me as the ’69s, but I’ve been converted in recent years. I love the return of the electric razor grille, there are brighter color options, and the houndstooth interior and roof options are pretty stunning.
This XR-7 has all the goodies that come with this model (like leather and vinyl interior), plus adds an Eliminator hood. Power comes from a 351 two-barrel, so might as well invest in a Marti report and find out if it’s Cleveland or Windsor.
1955 Ford Custom Series
Sure, a Crown Victoria Skyliner would be nice, but there’s something to be said for something more modest like this mid-series Customline Tudor sedan. The Ford’s styling was strong for the era, but perhaps only pale in comparison to what Chevrolet had to offer.
The 223 inline six-cylinder engine is paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, a combination that will be comfortable for daily driving. Just throw the fuzzy dice and you’re all set.
2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 550
Powered by a 5.5-liter engine with 383 horsepower, the SL is a grand tourer with a long history, although its original ancestor was more of a sports car than a GT.
As you can imagine, this car comes with pretty much every tech feature known to man, so unless you need Apple CarPlay, you won’t want to, but that’s what phones are for, right? If Hunter S. Thompson needed to go to Vegas today, I wouldn’t be surprised if he chose this SL.
