Once launched, the KTM 390 SMC R is expected to sit between the 390 Duke and 390 Adventure S in the brand’s lineup.
The KTM 390 SMC R has been tested in India for the first time, signaling the possible launch of a new superbike offering in the country. For those unfamiliar, superbikes are known to be adaptable and capable of performing well on a variety of terrains. This test mule showcases key features such as 17-inch wire-spoke wheels, consistent with superbike styling and promising agile handling on city streets and light off-road terrain. The motorcycle also appears to feature a trellis frame (a hallmark of KTM’s design philosophy), as well as components borrowed from the 390 Duke. The spy shots show the typical upright riding position of the superbike model, designed to maximize rider control. With its unique styling and advanced components, the KTM 390 SMC R could bring new energy to the performance bike market in India.

Following its global debut at EICMA 2024 in November, the KTM 390 SMC R is now on Indian roads. Recent spy shots show test mules sporting 17-inch wire-spoke wheels front and rear, which are likely to sport tubeless tires on the production model. The bike was found with a sari escort. In addition, another spy photo from two months ago revealed the 390 SMC R equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels. Wire-spoke and alloy wheel versions are available in the Indian market.
The upcoming 2025 KTM 390 SMC R will come with a standard long-travel suspension system. The new 390 SMC R is built on the 390 Adventure S platform and is equipped with a 399cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine paired with a six-speed gearbox. It produces a maximum power of 45.3bhp and a peak torque of 39Nm, similar to the 390 Duke. However, KTM may tweak the gearing ratios to better suit the power of the superbike. Further details about the mechanical specifications of the Indian model are currently under wraps.
