Mazda MX-5 Miata front airbags may exert excessive force during minor collisions. September 28, 2024 — The 2016-2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata recall affects 85,000 vehicles equipped with front airbags that may deploy with excessive force in a crash. Mazda said a software error in the airbag control module may be causing the problem. The front airbags should deploy with less force in minor collisions compared to high-intensity collisions. The problem is exacerbated if the occupants are not wearing seat belts. Mazda discovered the problem in April 2024 while producing airbag sensors for new models. Engineers tested the force with which the air bags deployed and determined the problem violated federal safety standards. As of September 11, 2024, Mazda has not received any reports of airbag-related crashes or injuries. About 7,300 vehicles are being recalled in Canada.
